How to Wear Sequins for the Holidays

November 28, 2012

Holiday fashion almost always calls for something that sparkles. Sequins can be daunting to wear for those who are afraid of showing up the disco ball at the holiday party.  There’s a fine line between glitter looking playful and girly and looking costume-y.  Here’s a few ways to incorporate a little sparkle into your wardrobe without going overboard.

Mix with casual pieces – Sequins can go from day to night when you mix them with more casual pieces.  Try a sequin sweater with jeans and a clean blouse, or a casual tee and leggings like on Emma Roberts.

Layer, layer, layer – A sequined mini can be daunting to flaunt in the daylight. By layering a chambray button-down shirt, sweater and trench over it, the skirt becomes a statement piece in a well-put together look.

Pair with neutrals – Sequins dress can be work appropriate when styled properly.  Wear a knee-length dress with a trench coat, nude heels and simple makeup to keep it classy in the office. Or try sequin printed shorts like this, but keep warm (and covered!) with tights, and a neutral blouse.

Leave it to detail – Add sparkle without going overboard by looking for pieces with sequin details.  We love sequined stripes and polka dots for this winter.

A flash of sparkle – Ease into the sequin trend with accessories that shine. A sequined bag or shoes can jazz up any outfit without feeling gaudy.

What’s your favorite way to wear sequins?
