Inauguration Fashion

January 23, 2013

First Lady Michelle Obama made a statement four years ago as her husband was sworn in. This year proved no different. The FLOTUS, always a staunch supporter of American designers, wore Thom Browne to the morning swearing-in ceremony. Mrs. Obama chose a beautiful navy silk jacquard coat and dress with a checked pattern. To top off the look (and her chic new haircut!) she paired it with earrings by Cathy WatermanJ. Crew and pumps. Thom Browne, well known for his men’s wear business, was told only an hour before that the First Lady would wear his design, a coat with a fitted bodice and flare skirt. Browne designed the outfit specifically for Mrs. Obama after her office invited him to submit an idea several months ago but never knew she would choose it. The dress underneath is a near negative of the coat, in silver.
In theme with their mother, Malia Obama’s coat was from J. Crew, and Sasha Obama wore a coat and a dress from Kate Spade, both in shades of purple.

Wife of the Vice President, Jill Biden took her own fashion risk yesterday with a large bow on the neckline of her silver Lela Rose jacket. Mrs. Biden bought her dress at Neiman Marcus and personally requested a matching coat from the designer. The coat, made of shimmering silk and wool, was made in just one week’s time in order to make the auspicious deadline. No stranger to presidential requests, Lela Rose has previously outfitted Barbara and Jenna Bush for past inaugurations.

For the inaugural ball FLOTUS donned a stunning a long halter-neck ruby chiffon custom gown made by the man she made famous four years ago, Jason Wu. The gown, full of shiny velvet detailing, was paired with an armful of sparkly bangles, Jimmy Choo shoes, and a ring by Kimberly McDonald. Fun fact: As soon as the inauguration is over, all of Mrs. Obama’s clothes go straight to the National Archives. It’s there you can see the Jason Wu gown she wore in 2008 and where all of today’s outfits and accessories will end up.

What do you think of Michelle Obama’s dress? Is it another Jason Wu classic or should she have chosen a new designer?
